For some reason, I’ve always loved illuminated manuscripts. To me, a lot of the ornamentation and marginalia are really just doodles on crack. I wanted to create a whole illustrated alphabet – not of typography but, rather, lettering (yes, there is a difference) – with each letter being different in style and feel. I also wanted to render it by hand, in my sketchbook, and without the use of other implements (i.e. rulers, guides etc.). I thought that I’d be able to do one letter a day – I was mistaken!
